News from Marianne Hoynes

I just returned from Washington DC where I volunteered with my husband, Joshua Lowe (who makes travel possible), as a patient advocate for the American College of Rheumatology. I went to speak to the offices of the congress and senate from my state, about reimbursing rheumys for patients who have medicare, making biologic drugs affordable, and continuing to fund the NIH and ACR, who are looking for a cure. Many chief aides of the representatives from NJ, along with leaders of the American College of Rheumatology and their political board, all were given copies of the film, The Healthcare Movie. We also gave a few out to those who lead teams in their states as national spokespeople for devastating inflammatory rheumatic illness, and who were also patient advocates.

First Screening : A Success

Friends of Medicarehosted a first screening of The Healthcare Movie in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) on August 18th, at the Iron Worker’s Local 720 Union Hall.

It is always hard to know what to expect when preparing for a first screening. So with butterflies in our stomachs we watched as people entered one by one and filled the seats to the point where more chairs had to be brought in from other parts of the building. In the end there were over 120 people at the screening, with standing room only.

To our great pleasure at the end of the film, everyone stood up and gave it a standing ovation! We wonder if we will get the same kind of reception in the US!
